General Information of Butoconazole (Femstat)

Butoconazole is used as a vaginal cream. About 5 percent of each dose is absorbed into the bloodstream. It may also be applied to the skin to treat common fungal infections. It is effective against common fungal infections, but the exact mechanism of action is not known.

Cautions and Warnings

Do not use Butoconazole if you know you are allergic to it. Proper diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. Do not use this product without first consulting your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

  • Most common: vaginal burning, itching, or irritation.
  • Other: vaginal discharge, swelling of the vulva, soreness, and itchy fingers.

Usual Dose

One applicatorful into the vagina at bedtime for 3 to 6 days. Pregnant women who use Butoconazole cream should use it for 6 days and only during the last 6 months of pregnancy.

Special Information of Butoconazole (Femstat)

When using the vaginal cream, insert the whole applicatorful of cream high into the vagina. Be sure to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed. Call your doctor if you develop burning or itching.

Refrain from sexual intercourse or use a condom while using this product to avoid reinfection. Sanitary napkins may prevent staining of your clothing by Butoconazole.

If you forget to take a dose of Butoconazole, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

Special Populations

Pregnancy/Breast-feeding
Pregnant women should avoid using this product during pregnancy because the use of a vaginal applicator may cause problems. If it is to be used, it must be avoided during the first 3 months of pregnancy. The effect of Butoconazole on the developing fetus is not known.
It is not known if Butoconazble passes into breast milk. Nursing mothers using this product should watch their infants for possible drug side effects.

Seniors
Older adults may take this medication without special restriction. Follow your doctor’s directions and report any side effects at once.
